Are Multivitamins Worth it?

While you may have heard conflicting opinions about the need for a multivitamin, most experts agree that they’re safe to take and may have some benefits for most people. (1) For example, some multivitamins contain antioxidants— substances that protect your body from the damages caused by harmful free radicals. (2) And some vitamins, like B9 (folate) and B12, play an important role in cell metabolism and DNA synthesis.

If you care about your health, most likely you take vitamins. Why? Certainly not because the mainstream advice has been to do so for years. Then, why? Usually, it is because you know that something is missing from your diet. You don’t feel as good, and you want to wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day.

You want that energy and vitality that you once had when you were eating better. So, you buy a multivitamin and hope to feel better.  You take it every day and hope for better results. But, when you look in the mirror, you don’t see much of a change and you wonder if it’s worth it.

A multivitamin might be nice to have. However, a multivitamin alone cannot guarantee you are getting the optimal levels of vitamins and minerals you need. This is because we are not always getting the recommended daily amounts of fruits and vegetables and other foods that naturally contain the vitamins and minerals you need. Therefore, it is important to get your vitamins and minerals from food sources as well.

So, are multivitamins worth it? Well, this really depends on your diet and if you feel as healthy as you are now. If you feel unhealthy, then maybe you should try taking multivitamins, but you should also consider changing to a healthier diet.

What Exactly Is A Multivitamin?

Before we go on any further, I do want to clear up the question, what exactly is a multivitamin?

Multivitamins are supplements containing more than one vitamin. They contain minerals, too. Most multivitamins contain 10 to 13 vitamins, with B vitamins and vitamin C being the most common. They also contain iron, folic acid, and zinc. Multivitamins are used to treat or prevent vitamin deficiencies. They are also used to treat or prevent a lack of certain vitamins that are caused by poor diet, certain illnesses, or during pregnancy.

Multivitamins are taken to supplement your diet and provide you with the nutrients your body needs. There are many different types, each with its own benefits and drawbacks. The best thing to do is to discuss your options with a health care professional to figure out what will work best for you.

When you’re looking for a multivitamin, you’re probably hoping to fill gaps in your diet or get more of a certain vitamin. But you’re also looking for a product that tastes great, dissolves quickly, and doesn’t leave a bad aftertaste.  So, taking a multivitamin that’s easy to swallow and gives you energy is a bonus.
